# Draft and Scout

## Overview

Draft and scout are two coupled systems that could acquire players.

Draft order depends on the draft points.

Therefore, invest some money in scout is important to get better draft order (and possibly better draft player).

Most draft players are well trained while scout youth are mostly untrained.

It can be considered that draft is for short-term replenishment and scout is long-term.

## Scout

In general case, one can send a scout for young potential every day.

Depends on the budget and target, there are different probability to discover high potential youngsters.

If the scouted player is not signed, he will be transformed(?) into draft points for draft.

Different strategies could be used to choose the scout type, while there are a few things in common.

1. NEVER EVER scout old players

Old player type has higher scout bonus, while the training points of the old players are evenly distributed across all skills.

They will have high RT but averaged skills like 888 888 888 888.

For low potential players, they have too many points wasted on less needed skills.

For high potential players, the skills might be useful, while they still need a few seasons to train their main skills to acceptable levels.

Another drawbacks for old players is that their experience are low compared to the player trained from younger ages.

With higher RT, the old players also require high salary such as 15K per week.

It could be a huge burden for low league teams.

2. NEVER EVER scout unpredictable players

Though the unpredictable type gives higher probability bonus, most of the unpredictable players have extremely awkward skill potential and make them hard to use.
For example, center with -50% toughness, rebounds and +99% close shot or a guard with -50% speed, +99% toughness and three pointers.

3. Be aware of your finance

The more you spend, the higher you may find a high potential future star, and the easier you may go bankruptcy if you did not take care of your income/spending.

4. Avoid scouting guards

The height of centers, forwards and guards are in three overlapped random range.

Due to the randomness of the height growth, part of the youngsters will not be as tall as expected.

Some young centers will eventually become forwards, and so does the forwards.

Regarding taller players have a little bit more advantages in basketball, one should consider not scout guards.

5. Transform low potential into draft points

This also depends on the money one spends.

For example, a 5P player may be acceptable for free scouts while 100 points is usually more favorable for 10K scouts.

There are mainly three strategies to choose the scout type.

1. Scout for the most valuable

Classical centers.

That is.

Due to the randomness of the height, tall centers are rare and thus more valuable.

2. Scout for the highest probability

This strategy aims for high potentials.

3. Scouting based on the team need

Evenly scout different types of players for the five positions.

This strategy would be more suitable for teams like to farm.

It could be more flexible to game changes as well.

## Draft

There are three major categories of the draft players, fully-trained, partially-trained, and young potential.

Fully-trained players have 1p with decent skills based on the player type and discounted salary of two years.

Partially-trained players are like old scout players while with discounted salary of two years.

Young potentials are like young scout players.

In most of the cases, the draft players are the immediate replenishment for a team.

Thus, they should be chosen based on the team’s need.

One should also consider the team’s budget.

Some players might be better with higher RT while the salary is too expensive for the team.

For teams with lower draft order, it is possible that there is no good players in their turns.

It could also be a valid option to hold the draft points for the next season or choose young potentials.

對於小前鋒位置,我會優先考慮具有三分能力和防守技能的球員。在SF位置選擇防守型狙擊手或純射手可以確保球隊中能攻又能守的球員,不僅能在進攻端做出貢獻,同時也能在場上保持強大的防守能力。
 
4.中鋒(C) / 大前鋒(PF) - 運動型低位或低位得分:
為了增強內線搶籃板和得分能力,在中鋒或大前鋒位置我會選擇運動型低位或低位得分。這兩種類型的球員可以提高球隊在禁區的統治力,可以有效地鞏固籃板並快速轉換低位進攻機會。

今天我們要討論的主題是如何訓練18歲以下的球員,以下就後衞、小前鋒、內線分別討論:
 
1.後衛
以青年後衛球員來說,我個人比較喜歡的類型是防守型狙擊手,攻守兼備的球員,在Basketpulse中,三分球射手是很吃香的,且良好的防守技能,也不會使隊伍有防守漏洞。而就訓練方面,我會傾向把Speed、Three pointers、Contesting shot、Jump依序練到等級10,再將進攻智商及傳球練到等級6,如此已具備基本的上場能力,後續再依照球員的能力上限去訓練。

2.小前鋒
如同前述後衛的訓練方式,我喜歡的類型一樣是防守型狙擊手,以三分球為進攻方式,而訓練方式與後衛一樣。

3.內線球員
以青年內線球員來說,我最喜歡的類型是低位得分手,因為他有良好的近距離投籃能力,且有良好的身體素質,有防守能力也有籃板能力,十分適合內線這個位置。而訓練方面,我會傾向先訓練Athletic skill直到速度等級7,再依序將Toughness、Jump練到等級10,而後訓練近距離投籃能力到等級10,再將Contesting shot、籃板能力依序練到等級10,最後將進攻智商及傳球練到等級6。如此即能在籃球場上有貢獻,而後續則依照各個球員本身能力上限的不同,而去調整技能提升。

I think carefully the type of players I'm drafting or looking in scouts.

Let's start with drafting players.

1. Have a Club Plan.

Ask yourself, do you want your club to immediately compete against stronger opponents? Or do you want to develop young players for Long Term Plan for your Club?
If you already have veteran and strong players in your club, it's best to draft someone who is strong and well developed already. For example, drafting a 24 year old 100 RT player with predicted peak 150 RT compared to a 70 RT player with predicted peak 200 RT.
And if you are looking for a Long Term Plan for your club, it's best to draft a young player with high potential.

2. Look for player that your club needs.

When I'm drafting a player, I patiently check the players who are joining the draft and players in my Club. I analyze my Club Roster and look for weak positions, or players I need. Then I check the players joining the draft and look for the best option.

For new players, I recommend drafting young players, and for strong clubs, it's best to draft strong players who can come up with your players to help your club win.

Scouting

On choosing the type of players I'm scouting, I strategize it so I have a better chance of finding a good talent.

1. Look for type of players you need.

It's important to look for players you need because if you sign a player from the scouts you can't insert in your roster it's just a waste of money.

2. Check the newly found talents in the week.

Check the details of the newly found talents so you can have a better chance of finding a good talent as well as idea on players you are looking for. Check what country they are from, there position, age, potential, and RT. It will help you have a better chance on finding a good talent.

3. Invest only on scouting if you don't have financial problems.

It's best to invest on scouting only if you don't have financial problems, because your club may go into bankruptcy. Try to analyze your financial balance and your expenses for the season.
If you have extra money for the rest of the week or season, you can invest but don't invest the exact amount remaining for you. For example, you have an extra money of 5000 Eu for the rest of the week or season, just invest a lesser amount. I recommend 85% less than the exact extra amount you have for the remaining of the week or season. For example if you have 5000 Eu try not to exceed 4250 Eu on scouting.

Some might say it's better to invest big on scouting players than look in the marketplace.

It depends on you, investing big on scouting players increased your chance on finding good talents and sign quality and young players for lower salary compared to looking in the marketplace where there is no assurance of getting the player and it cost more money. However there is also no assurance of getting the quality players you are looking too in scouting even if you invest on it.

Besides from what the other managers mentioned, I have recently started scouting 14-15 year old universal forwards. I find that this type of skillset may be taking slightly longer to develop but is versatile and I find myself happier not to be in a position suffering while seeing little points on an important skill due to -50 potential. :)

My discovery during the last draft was role player type. This type of player is super-cheap, the competition for it is little and you can still get a decent player. Take Julian Moyuelo for example - his salary is 6.800 Eur and he is averaging 3 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Good addition for a back-up PG saving money for the leaders.
